Volunteer Training

Training is an important part of learning to become an effective leader.  The important scouting position you hold will be easier and more effective once you develop the skills necessary to deliver a quality scouting program every Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturer desires.  Every youth member of Scouting deserves a Trained Leader.

The Pacific Harbors Council provides training courses for every position in Scouting.  The information below will help you find the courses you need for your current or future position, when they are scheduled, and contact information if you have questions about training courses offered in your area.

PACK ORIENTATED

Cubmaster and Assistant Cubmaster Position Specific Training

This course is intended to provide Cubmasters with the information and tools they need to successfully lead a Cub Scout pack. Cubmasters and assistants who complete this training and Youth Protection training are considered “trained” for both positions.  On-Line or Instructor led.

Den Leader Position-Specific Training

This course is intended to provide Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear den leaders with the information and tools they need to conduct successful den meetings. Den leaders who complete the Tiger Cub, Wolf, and Bear training and Youth Protection training are considered trained for all three positions. On-Line or Instructor led.

Webelos Leader Specific Training

This course is intended to provide Webelos den leaders with the information and tools they need to conduct successful den meetings. Den leaders who complete the Webelos training and Youth Protection training are considered trained as Webelos den leaders.  On-Line or Instructor led.

Pack Committee Challenge—Pack Committee Position Specific Training

The Pack Committee Challenge is designed for pack committees and is the course pack committee members need complete to be considered “trained.”    On-Line or Instructor led.

TROOP ORIENTED

Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader-Specific Training

The course is intended to provide troop leadership with the information and tools they need to lead successful Boy Scout troops. Scoutmasters and assistants who complete this training, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, and Youth Protection training are considered “trained.”  Instructor led

Troop Committee Challenge—Troop Committee Position Specific Training

The Troop Committee Challenge is designed for troop committees and becomes the course (along with Youth Protection training) troop committee members need to be considered “trained.”  On-Line or Instructor led.

 VARSITY ORIENTED

Varsity Coach Leader Specific Training

The course is intended to provide an introduction to the Boy Scouts of America and to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Varsity team leadership experience. Varsity Coaches and Assistant Varsity Coaches who complete this training, Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, and Youth Protection training are considered “trained.”

This course will give Varsity Coaches and Assistant Varsity Coaches practical ways to instill the eight methods of Scouting into their team program.  The eight methods of Scouting addressed during the three sessions of the course are:

  • The Role of the Varsity Coach,
  • The Outdoor/Sports Program and the Advancement Program, and
  • Program Planning and Team Administration

This course is Instructor led.

Team Committee Challenge—Team Committee Position-Specific Training

The Team Committee Challenge is designed for team committees and becomes the course (along with Youth Protection training) team committee members need to be considered “trained.”  On-Line or Instructor led.

VENTURING ORIENTATED

Venturing Advisor Position Specific Training

The course is intended to provide an introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful Venturing crew leadership experience.  This course will give adult Venturing leaders the tools to”

  • Explain the Venturing program and its value to youth,
  • Outline the specific values of the Venturing program,
  • Explain the relationship between crew officers and Advisors,
  • Value the challenges of working with young adults,
  • List the Venturing opportunities, and
  • Conduct the annual program planning process.

Venturing Advisors who complete this training and Venturing Youth Protection Training are considered “trained”. Instructor led.

Crew Committee Challenge—Crew Committee Position Specific Training

The Crew Committee Challenge is designed for crew committee members and becomes the course (along with the Venturing version of Youth Protection training) crew committee members need to be considered “trained.”    On-Line or Instructor led.

ALL UNITS

Chartered Organization Representative Training

This course is intended to provide Charted Organization Representatives with an introduction to the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful unit program.  On-Line or Instructor led.

Youth Protection Training

This course is required for all registered adults and must be taken every two years.  Adults not registered with BSA are required to complete this course before attending any Scout camping activities. On-Line or Instructor led.

Venturing Youth Protection Training

This course is required for all adult Venturing leaders. This training will help leaders understand and guide youth through possible problems as it relates to abuse. You will also learn about the issues you may face as a leader to help provide a safer environment for the crew members and to protect yourself from false accusations.   On-Line or Instructor led.
