Scouting for Food

Scouts Serving Their Communities, One Donation at a Time

Thank You, Puyallup Tribe of Indians
Pacific Harbors Council is grateful to the Puyallup Tribe of Indians for their generous support of Scouting for Food 2026. Their contribution helps our Scouts collect and deliver food to neighbors in need across our communities.

November 2026

Scouting for Food is Pacific Harbors Council’s council-wide food drive bringing Scouts, families, and communities together to help neighbors experiencing food insecurity.

Throughout our communities, Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturers, Sea Scouts, families, and volunteers will work together to collect nonperishable food and support local food banks and food pantries.

It is a simple way to make a big difference — and a chance for Scouts to put the Scout Oath and Scout Law into action by helping other people.

How Scouting for Food Works

Scouting for Food takes place over two weekends.

Community Notification Day

Scouting units will visit neighborhoods throughout the Pacific Harbors Council service area and distribute Scouting for Food door hangers.

The door hangers will let residents know that Scouts will return the following Saturday to collect donations.

Residents who would like to participate can simply gather nonperishable food donations during the week and have them ready for collection.

Food Collection Day

Scouts will return to participating neighborhoods to collect donated food.

Units will then deliver the donations to designated collection locations or participating community food-bank partners.

All donations collected through Scouting for Food remain focused on helping individuals and families in our local communities.

For Our Communities

Want to Help?

If you receive a Scouting for Food door hanger at your home, participating is easy!

Place your donated nonperishable food items in a bag or box and leave them in a visible location near your front door in time for collection day.

Please have donations outside by the collection time listed on your door hanger.

Suggested Donations

Our local food-bank partners especially appreciate shelf-stable, unopened food such as:

  • Canned vegetables and fruit
  • Canned soups and chili
  • Canned tuna, chicken, and other proteins
  • Peanut butter and other nut or seed butters
  • Pasta and pasta sauce
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Cereal and oatmeal
  • Shelf-stable milk
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Canned meals
  • Juice
  • Healthy snacks
  • Other shelf-stable pantry foods

Please do not donate opened, damaged, expired, homemade, or perishable food.

Specific requested items may vary by local food-bank partner.

For Scouting Units

Join the Council-Wide Good Turn

Every Pack, Troop, Crew, and Ship in Pacific Harbors Council is encouraged to participate!

Units can select a neighborhood or community to serve and coordinate their Scouting for Food efforts locally while participating as part of our larger council-wide service project.

Weekend One

Units distribute Scouting for Food door hangers in their selected neighborhood or community.

Weekend Two

Units return to the same area, collect donated food, and deliver it to their designated collection location or participating food-bank partner.

Units should plan to provide appropriate adult supervision and follow all current Scouting America Safeguarding Youth and safety guidelines throughout the project.

Unit Participation

Participating units will be asked to:

  1. Sign up their Pack, Troop, Crew, or Ship to participate.
  2. Identify the general neighborhood or community they plan to serve.
  3. Request the number of Scouting for Food door hangers they expect to distribute.
  4. Distribute door hangers.
  5. Collect donations.
  6. Deliver donations to a food-bank partner or collection location.
  7. Have donations weighed or counted.
  8. Report your unit’s results to Pacific Harbors Council so we can celebrate our combined community impact.

Scouting for Food Door Hangers

Pacific Harbors Council will provide Scouting for Food door hangers to participating units while supplies last.

Door hangers will include information for residents about the food drive and space for units to provide collection information.

They will also introduce families to Scouting in their community and provide information for anyone interested in learning more about Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing, or Sea Scouts.

Where Will the Food Go?

Scouting for Food is about Scouts serving the communities where they live.

Pacific Harbors Council units will work with their local food banks, food pantries, community organizations, and other partners to provide their collections.

Help Us Measure Our Impact

Every can, box, jar, and bag helps tell the story of Scouts serving their neighbors.

After Scouting for Food, participating units will report the amount of food they collected so Pacific Harbors Council can calculate our council-wide impact.

Our 2026 Goal

16,000 pounds of food

Together, Scouts throughout Pacific Harbors Council can make a meaningful difference for families across our communities.

Do I have to be a Scout to donate?

No! Scouting for Food is a community-wide effort. Anyone can donate food and help support local families.

Shelf-stable, unopened, nonperishable foods are best.

Scouting units will serve as many neighborhoods as possible, but Scouts may not be able to reach every home within the council.

Pacific Harbors Council will have red bins for collection at their main office at 4802 South 19th St, Tacoma WA 98405, please bring any food donations and we will make sure it gets to a local partner.

We want as many Scouts as possible participating in Scouting for Food. Units should contact Pacific Harbors Council to discuss scheduling their participating while still supporting the council-wide effort.

Yes. Please have your donations weighed and report your results to the council so your service can be included in the council-wide total.

Absolutely. Businesses, schools, faith communities, civic organizations, and other community partners can support Scouting for Food by hosting collection locations, promoting the drive, donating food, or partnering with local Scouting units.
